It's designed to be a fitted short, however, if you prefer a looser fit we would recommend to size up. This short provides comfort with the unique detail of the tie cinch up the side of the short allowing for an adjustable length.
I bought these shirts for my petite 10 year old daughter. I usually buy her a YL, but they were out. The YXL fit and worked well, especially since the draw strings on the sides can be pulled up.
